heh, I remember all the people that thought GW would completely die when Oblivion came out. Well it came out and Guildwars is still here. I'm sure Guildwars will also survive NWN2

Ah, but that was because Oblivion was a huge disappointment, and got uninstalled from my computer not long after buying it.

I have to say, I didn't see either of these classes coming. But, looking back, they are pretty much an Amazon and Paladin. Word. Now where's my dual axe-weilding Barbarian and shape-shifting Druid? Muahahahahaha!

Ugh, NWN2 isn't even on my "vaguely interested" list. Considering I spent literally hundreds of hours on the Bioware forums before 1 came out, that should tell you something.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the term, a dervish was a poet and dancer from a certain mystic branch of Islam. They were best known for dancing wildly in a spirit of religious extasy - this usually involved spinning around in circles a lot*, hence the expression "whirling dervish".
Of course these ideas overlap with some previously generated concept classes - they're obvious mechanics that fit in well with the game engine. Heck, only yesterday I was thinking that the Cyclone Axe and Watch Yourself Warrior mechanics could be expanded into a new class... I hadn't thought of expanding them into two new classes, though!
Initial thoughts on balance: Dervishae for PVE, Paragons for PVP. Ideally, each class will have one of their skill trees be more useful in the other area (the Water Magic of Dervish-land, say).
The core Dervish mechanic of sweeping attacks sounds quite hard to make useful in PVP. Expanded "shouts" on Paragons should work OK - like mini ritualists - depending on how well they 'stack' with other effects.
Initial thoughts on appearance: Dervishes are looking pretty sweet - vaguely thief-like. I really hope their animations are made dance-y (like a Rits, only more frantic) - some of us know what a dervish actually is and don't buy that they're just arabic assassins!
Longer skirts on male Paragons, plsthx.
Initial thoughts on what-I'm-going-to-play: One Dervish/Assassin, coming right up! I fully intend to find a broken combo with Assassin's Promise. And yes, I know this will probably involve going to Cantha and fighting my way to Senji's Corner to change secondaries... But trust me, this is the only way those Deadly Arts skills are ever going to see play. Anywhere.
Thinking Mesmer/Paragon - if we finally get a decent male mesmer costume, anyway! But I'm sure I can come up with a good backline support role for that particular mix.
*Transcendant religious experience, or plain dizzyness? You decide!

Yay, finally somebody else who knows the history of the dervish.
Speaking of history,
Didn't assassins originate in the Middle East? I hope they get some armor that makes them completely black clad in cloth, something that makes them look more like an assassin than a ninja.
My thoughts on some good characters...
PvE: Dervish/Ranger... depending on the healing power of the Dervish, that seems to have soloist written all over it.
PvP: Paragon/Elementalist... Use Shouts mixed with Wards to give your team the perfect balance of offensive and defensive boosts.
What I will end up going with...
PvE: Dervish/Paragon... gotta unlock the skills for both, and I think being able to attack, heal, and shout can't be too shabby.
PvP: Assassin/Paragon... what the heck, I doubt you'll see many of them, might as well give it a try. Either go with Crit Hitting spears, or shouts to hopefully help the Assassins poor defense.

Close, but actually wrong.
At one point an employee of ANet did say that not always will there be a new class with expansions. However, during a later interview Jeff Strain himself forcefully recanted that, assuring his interviewer that there will be new classes with every expansion of Guild Wars because that was their primary mechanism to add new playstyles to the game.
Granted, they could just as easily go back and recant that, but as it stands every new expansion will have at least one new class in it. Or so says the lead developer.

Sufi I think.
I also think that yes, assassins originated from the mid east. I vaguely remember something about them being their own tribe. I know I should have paid more attention to History channel.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to trying these two out and seeing what's what with them. In the Factions PVP preview, I tried an assassin and that's when I found I really didn't like the idea or mechanics of it. I'm not a front-line type of person.
As for the female Paragon, I so hope they don't keep the elementalist figure type. I hate that whole "runs like a girly-girl" thing. And for pete's sake, please give the male Paragon some closed-toe shoes!! Guys wearing sandals is just not right. Not right at all. lol

The Dervish explains the absorption nerf. He is designed to be a front line character but with a war's absorption it would have been an obvious choice over the dervish.
The Dervish using aoe attacks will fit right in with smiting more so than a war would. This class could break Ward camping all together if there is a skill that cannot be blocked or evaded.
Pargon I'm not not so sure about. Defensive shouts and throwing spears. Also the change to shout skill's range just makes them confusing (earshot range, wtf). I was just fine with nearby. I could judge nearby how the hell do I know how far earshot range is?
Can't wait to see the skills.

Love the idea behind both classes.
Worried: Dervish will be new wammo or assassin - way too many bad players. Paragon will attract the egotistical = "I'm the Paragon, I lead the party" type.
I'm going to try both during the pvp, can't wait

I'm expecting a range of ranges. Think the difference between IWAY's radar range shout versus Watch Yourself's nearby prot. The stronger the ability or group buff, the shorter the range.
We'll know soon enough
/sigh...there goes me PvE mesmer...again. Back to the ole PvP slot.
EDIT: Dervish's description makes it sound like an intended front line fighter, and stationary on that front line instead of the get in get out Sin. I expect it to be built to take a pounding as well as a Warrior, just deflecting the damage in a different way. I also expect to see a lot of Wa/De's in the future if this is true.
Just please o please Anet, GIVE MY MONK SOME GOOD GROUP HEALING E-MANAGERS IN DIVINE FAVOR!

Here's what i'm hoping for the new camp, WE have to do all the Missions and primary quest (Like Factions), but only the first time!! So once you do it once, you can get all the runs you want. This wouldn't be TOO hard to do.
Also, for some reason i'm worried bout bringing Old chars to NightFall, i don't know why, i just have a feeling Anet will do something stupid...

Hi there,
Glad you're all as excited as we are about the news of Nightfall!
A few comments or answers to questions from this thread:
The models for the Paragon and Dervish are quite different than the other professions. I've seen the character creation screen and the face options are distinctive and new, and of course you can tell the armours are quite exceptional, too.
As to how they play, well, you can see next week. Very interesting, and quite unusual. I can't even begin to guess the most popular combinations that will come from the addition of these two new professions.
There are no plans to lift the level cap. 20 it is; 20 it shall be.
Not sure about the day/night thing, but it's a possibility.
I will definitely ask about the slots for the PvP Event, and how you'll be able to make the new characters. For PvP play, don't most people have a PvP slot? Anyway, I will ask about whether temporary slots will be offered.
As to how the game will roll out -- that is, whether it will have additional character slots if linked -- I will also inquire. (I don't see it lowering the desire for the extra slots; I think players will still want to have that option.
Oh, and it's ok to "doubt the devs' almighty wisdom," but very gracious to take back all that doubting stuff.
[[[A bit of history, since someone asked: Assassins originated in the Middle East around the time of the Crusades. They were a secret order of fanatics who used drugs (hashish) to get into a frenzy before going out and slaying people. The name is a derivative of hashish, I think.]]]

Actually Gaile, I think a lot of us were wondering whether or not we would have access to a "guest" account, like we did for the Factions PvP weekend.
Normally I do have a pvp slot, but I sacrificed that to make another (yes I now have 2) monk, and I just don't think that I can bring myself to delete her.
